Acid wash explained: why every piece looks a little different

That faded, cloudy look is created piece by piece, so no two acid-wash garments are exactly alike. Here is why, and how to keep it looking good.

Acid-wash clothing has a faded, cloudy pattern that makes a new piece look worn-in from day one. Despite the name, the effect is created with a bleaching wash during finishing, which lightens the colour unevenly.

Why no two pieces match

Every garment moves differently in the wash, so the lighter and darker areas land in different places. Two tees from the same batch can look slightly different. That is part of the look, not a fault: your piece is one of a kind.

How to wear it

  • Let the acid-wash piece be the focus and keep the rest of the outfit plain.
  • Black, grey and olive acid-wash all work with black trousers and white trainers.
  • An acid-wash co-ord set worn together makes a strong, simple outfit.

How to care for it

  • Wash inside out in cold or lukewarm water.
  • Wash with similar colours for the first few washes.
  • Do not use bleach: it will keep lightening the fabric.
  • Dry in the shade; strong sun fades colour faster.
